Until 1984 with the passage of the Shop (Hours of Opening and Employment) (Amendment) Act (Act No. 17 of 1984) amending the original Shop (Hours of Opening and Employment) Act from 1938, the majority of businesses trading in Trinidad and Tobago were required to be closed by law on a Sunday.

Other “closed days” were Good Friday, Christmas Day and any other days appointed as a Public Holiday under the respective Ordinance.
